THE BATTLE OF IWO JIMA describes one of the climatic battles in the Pacific. THE BATTLE OF IWO JIMA is a book of photographs selected to show the course of the bloody struggle the fighting men of the Fifth Amphibious Corps waged to conquer the island fortress of Iwo Jima. The commentary is by Marvin Veronee, the naval gunfire liaison officer of the 1st Battalion, 28th Marines, Fifth Division. He landed on Green Beachon D-Day, 19 February 1945 and remained with his battalion throughout the rest of the operation.

Reviews of THE BATTLE OF IWO JIMA
"This would be an outstanding document (in my opinion) that guys could pass on to their families that would give them an excellent overview of the entire picture, our situation in the Pacific prior to Iwo Jima and throughout the campaign to the end. A Iwo veteran could just hand this book to family members and say, “This is the way it was,” particularly if he were one of those guys who suffered from the agonizing loss of buddies, being severely wounded himself, etc., and can never bring himself to talk about it, even now. The nice thing about it is the number of photos that help tell the story with your own comments paralleling the action. There are many books (ponderous tomes) out on Iwo Jima, but whether family members would be willing to wade through them as we had to waded through the black sand, is questionable."

"Your book arrived yesterday and I was so fascinated by it I couldn’t put it down."
Iwo veteran
I am a disabled Marine veteran and a National Service Officer with the Disabled American Vererans in San Diego, CA. Many of the 9,000 veterans I represent are Iwo veterans and after hearing of their experiences, I appreciate full well the tribute of the photos you used in your book. Your book sits proudly on my desk daily. Jim Galliher

STORY OF A CITIZEN SOLDIER
Photo Page 2
Story of a Citizen Soldier is the personal memoir of Charles Bryan who served in the U.S. Army for five and one half years. His first assignment was with the 176th regiment guarding the public buildings in Washington. After further training at Fort Benning, GA, in May 1944, he was promoted to
the rank of Captain and shipped overseas in a replacement draft, first to England and then to Normandy. As CO of L Company, 3rd Battalion, 358th Regiment, 90th Division, he led his company and later the Third Battalion through five campaigns. His battalion was the first American Army unit to
cross Germany to Czechoslovakia. Lt.. Colonel Bryan was awarded a Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Service Cross, and the French Croix de Guerre.

Reviews of Citizen Soldier
Daniel A. Sheridan
"My father, Pfc Alfred D. Sheridan, L Company, Third Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division. He was slightly wounded twice, but served in L Company until wars end."
"Story of a Citizen Soldier provides an engaging look into the inner workings of an Infantry Rifle Company in the European Theatre during World War II. As Captain of L Company, Third Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, Bryan was responsible for the lives of 172 enlisted men and six officers commanding three rifle platoons, one weapons platoon, and his staff headquarters. With detailed maps and photographs, Bryan relays first-hand recollections interspersed with regimental accounts as his
company fought through the hedgerows of Normandy, to the Falaise Gap to the Moselle River Crossing and the Saar River Crossing, to the Battle of the Bulge and finally to the German Occupation. The reader comes to realize why the infantry was often referred to as Pattons Foot Cavalry. Bryan1s concerns extended beyond The Line to the well-being of his men, to the medics, to finding a cook for his men, and keeping them supplied with socks. This memoir is more than a story of battles, it is a story of men."

Larry Marszalck
"My father, Pfc. Henry P Marszalck was a rifleman in L Company, Third Battalion, 358th Regiment, 90th Division. He was wounded in June by rifle fire and more seriously by a grenade in August of 1944."
"Charles Bryan tells his story well, giving exact actions as they happened, as he led his men across Europe with the 358th Regiment. The pictures and illustrations, letters, regimental news, drawings, and maps let me feel like I participated with the regiment. What little I knew about
my dad's army experience in France has been brought closer to me. My dad told me about escorting prisoners, and on page 49, there is my dad's name in the Sniper, the division newsletter, about him escorting prisoners in the action of August 19th, 1944 at the Falaise Gap."
"My mother told me a story about the day my father was seriously wounded by a grenade. He was helped by a German. On page 44, Charlie talks about a German medic, with a red cross flag, stopping the fighting to help with the wounded. This maybe a coincidence, but I like to think my father was one of those wounded. In his book, Charlie has told me about experiences that my father (as many soldiers) never told their sons."

David Bragg
"My father, Pfc Eldredge Bragg was a rifleman in L Company, Third Battalion, 358th Regiment, 90th Division. He was wounded in January 1945 during cleanup operations of the Battle of the Bulge."
"Charles Bryans book, Story of a Citizen Soldier, is a book I could not set aside once I started reading it. His personal approach left me with a deeper insight, appreciation, and respect for the citizen soldier of World
War II. As I read about his combat journey across Europe I felt as though I were following my father's footsteps, who was under Charles Bryan's command."
